Bio: Arlene Gerardo is a doctoral psychology student who is completing her internship at the Cook Counseling Center. She is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas. She earned her a B.A. degree in Psychology and a B.S.W. from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. She earned her M.S.W. from Aurora University in Aurora, IL., and her M.S. degree in Psychology from Carlos Albizu University in Miami, FL. Currently, she is completing her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Carlos Albizu University. Professional interests include trauma, crisis intervention, adjustment issues, and anxiety and mood disorders. She enjoys working with individuals from diverse backgrounds through individual, couples, and group therapy. Her theoretical orientation is primarily influenced by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Positive Psychology, but she utilizes a collaborative and integrative approach. Her research focus has been on military psychology, emerging adulthood, and resilience.

Bio: Leslie is a doctoral psychology intern at Cook Counseling Center for the 2018-2019 academic year. She earned her B.A. in Psychology at Samford University and her M.Ed. in Educational Psychology Texas A&M University. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University. Leslie has a passion for working with college students dealing with a wide variety of concerns. She is particularly interested in working with students to address identity development concerns, relationship concerns, difficulties with the transition to college, and trauma. Additionally, Leslie enjoys providing support to students at Virginia Tech through group therapy and outreach. Leslie approaches her work with students with the goal of meeting them where they are, building a warm and authentic relationship, and working together to help them meet their goals. She hopes to create an environment which fosters safety, understanding, and interpersonal growth for clients. Her approach to therapy is influenced by humanistic and interpersonal therapies. She also incorporates mindfulness, self-compassion, and other resources to help meet the client’s needs. In her free time, Leslie enjoys painting, working out, and spending time with friends and family.

Bio: Kate is a doctoral psychology intern at the Cook Counseling Center for the 2018-109 academic year. She earned her B.S. degree in Psychology from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her M.A. degree in in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon. She is currently completing her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University. Kate enjoys working with students with a wide variety clinical concerns. She is specifically interested in working with students to address academic stress, interpersonal issues, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, identity concerns, and trauma. Kate’s approach to therapy in an integrative approach which includes CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and process oriented work. Her goal as a clinician is to provide a warm and inviting environment in an effort to help students feel empowered as they explore what could be preventing them from meeting their goals in life. Kate’s approach is also collaborative and focuses on meeting students where they are at in order to build a strong therapeutic alliance. Her research has focused on creating additional services for transgender and non-binary college students, as well as how vicarious trauma impacts mental health workers. In her free time, Kate enjoys attending concerts, traveling (when she get the chance), spending time with friends and family, cooking/baking, and enjoying the occasional Netflix/Hulu marathon.

Bio: Rami is a doctoral psychology intern at Cook Counseling Center for the 2018-2019 academic year. She earned both her B.S. in Art Education and her M.Ed. in Student Affairs with College Counseling at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Memphis. Rami enjoys working with college students, regardless of presenting concerns. She has particular interest in working with first generation students, identity concerns, trauma, and eating disorders. Rami approaches work with clients in a collaborative way, where working together, students gain meaningful insight into how they understand themselves in the world. Although Rami’s approach is informed by constructivist psychotherapy, she also incorporates interpersonal processing and feminist/multicultural theories in counseling. Her research focuses on LGBT issues and career counseling, with her dissertation exploring how heterosexist experiences at work affect career success and factors that buffer negative mental health outcomes of heterosexism at work. In her free time, Rami enjoys running, biking, kayaking, baking, and making friends with every dog she meets.
