Ellie Sturgis, PhD.
Ellie Sturgis is the interim director for Cook Counseling Center. Before coming to Virginia Tech, she spent a number of years as a therapist, on various faculties of medical schools and universities and has been an academic dean. She has also published several articles and book chapters on anxiety, substance abuse, eating and physiological disorders.
Sturgis’ professional interests include anxiety, mood, eating and substance abuse disorders as well as attentional and learning difficulties that impede a student’s ability to demonstrate knowledge. She is also interested in relationship issues, particularly those of LGBT students. Her therapy is influenced by cognitive-behavioral, biological, interpersonal perspectives and she uses a collaborative style when working with clients.
Sturgis holds a Ph.D from the University of Georgia and is a licensed clinical psychologist.
