Supervisory Teams

Rationale:  

A team approach provides opportunity for senior staff to collaborate, collectively shaping the supervisory experience of the psychology intern.  The teams decide together how to manage the supervision of individual and group therapy.  Along with the intern, the teams review the intern’s self assessment and determine the specific goals of supervision.  Through working together, the team provides the intern with a cohesive, supportive experience, and the staff has an opportunity to learn and work together.

The distinction between primary and secondary supervisors refers to the amount of time spent in individual supervision each week.  Primary supervisors meet with interns 2 hours/week and secondary supervisors meet with interns 1 hour.  Primary supervisors are Licensed Clinical Psychologists who are 3 years post-licensure. All full-time counseling staff are eligible to provide secondary supervision.

Supervisors and the training director will meet regularly each semester to review the progress of the intern.

Process:

During orientation, each intern meets with members of the training staff to discuss supervision styles and interests.  Interns will determine a rank-ordered list of supervisors with whom they would like to be paired.  The training director will use these lists to determine the intern’s primary and secondary supervisors for the semester.  If the intern does not receive their top choice(s) during the first semester, they will likely be matched with that choice during the second semester. 

Interns will rotate to a different supervisory team on the first day of the second semester.  Therefore, each intern will be supervised by a minimum of four supervisors.

Evaluations:

Evaluations of interns and supervisors will be completed before the beginning of spring semester and at the beginning of the second summer session.
