APA Accredited Internship in Clinical and Counseling Psychology
Intern Self-Assessment and Goals Statement
The purpose of the Intern Self-Assessment is for you to formulate a personal statement and set goals and objectives for your internship year. It is our hope that this exercise will help you develop a sense of ownership of your internship experience, as your goals will shape the work of your supervisors and training director.
Below is a list of professional skills that will be addressed in your internship training. In your self-assessment, we want you to first consider each skill area listed and write an evaluation of your current skills in each area. Then, set goals in each area for the upcoming year.
Second, write a personal statement that helps us to understand your particular “story” – where you are right now and what you might need from us during the next year. It may be helpful to reflect on your needs as an intern (e.g., What do I need from supervision? What do I need from seminars? What do I need from fellow interns? What do I need in terms of emotional support?). It may be helpful to reflect on your personal and professional areas of strength, as well as areas where you feel challenged (e.g., developing a professional identity, concerns about evaluation, perfectionism, etc.). Utilize your self-knowledge to develop this personal statement. From this self-reflection you can then delineate specific goals and objectives you have for the internship.
This is an exercise----not an examination. Your thoughts will be helpful as you dialogue with your supervisors about your needs as an intern. This document can be altered during the course of the year.
