Supervision of Groups Seminar

Goal:

 

This seminar will develop and review skills in group therapy.  This includes training and practice in facilitating and supervising the co-facilitation of various types of groups including support groups, process groups and psycho-educational groups.

 

Objectives:

 

Interns will be able to demonstrate competency in the facilitation of psychotherapy, support and/or psycho-educational groups within a university counseling center setting.  This will include:

          Initiation of groups

          Observation of group process

          Discussion of group process

          Intervention/Clinical skills

          Group Termination

          Working with a co-facilitator

          Supervision of a co-facilitator            

 

Activities:

 

·        Interns will meet weekly (1.5 hours) for Group Therapy Seminar/Supervision with Group Coordinator and staff who are conducting groups

·        Interns will actively participate in seminar discussions

·        Interns will facilitate or co-facilitate at least one group each semester.

·        Interns will receive supervision of their group facilitation from a co-facilitator and/or seminar leader.

 

Outcome Measures:

Interns will write process summaries of all group sessions and review these with co-facilitator, supervisor and/or seminar leader.

Interns will be evaluated on their group facilitation skills by a co-facilitator (or seminar leader) as evidenced by achieving above objectives.

Interns will be evaluated by members of the groups they lead through satisfaction surveys.

Meeting 2:  Stages of Groups, Part 1 (Ethical Issues, Forming Group, Initial Stage)

Meeting 3:  Stages of Group, Part 2 (Transition Stage, Working Stage, Ending Stage)

Meeting 4:  Video: Evolution of Group (Corey and Corey), Group member roles

Fall 2006:  Review group sessions, Discuss current experiences

Spring 2007:  Review group sessions, Discuss current experiences
