Outreach and Consultation Services

Mission

Outreach and Consultation services are an integral part of the mission of the Cook Counseling Center (CCC).  The center reaches out to students, faculty and staff through the provision of educational programming and workshops on a variety of topics.  The programs and workshops are designed to enhance the learning and development of students, faculty, and staff.  Outreach services also include providing  consultation when there is a concern about the behavior or well-being of a student.

The programs that have been requested in the past include: eating disorders, stress management, time management, healthy relationships, depression in college students, and orientation to the center’s services.  Cook Counseling Center staff members also work with faculty members who would like presentations or facilitation of discussions that address specific concerns of college students and complement their course content. The staff works with faculty members to develop programs for their specific needs.  The center also offers programs for special national events such as National Depression Screening Day and Eating Disorder Awareness week.  Our consultation services include responses to campus crises during which staff members meet with students, faculty and staff at their desired locations.

Peer Assistance for Learning Program

The Peer Assistance for Learning program (PAL) is a volunteer opportunity for Virginia Tech students.  This program offers students the opportunity to be trained in making interactive presentations and to become Peer Assistants for Learning (PAL’s).  In this role, they provide programmatic support for the center by making outreach presentations on various topics.  They help spread information about mental health awareness and study skills.  The Cook Counseling Center’s PAL’s also provide educational programs designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, as well as helping students better understand when to seek treatment.  They present programs in the classrooms, residence halls, or other requested venues.  The Peer Assistance for Learning programs include:

  1. Orientation about the Resources and Services of Cook Counseling Center
  2. Stress Management
  3. Time Management
  4. Mental Health Issues of  College Students
  5. Managing Academic Stress
  6. Healthy Relationships.

Outreach Request Guidelines

Outreach programs can be provided throughout the year.  However, it is advisable that the center be contacted two weeks in advance of the presentation date to allow our staff enough time to prepare for the presentation.

The center receives a large number of requests towards the end of the semester, and it may be more difficult for staff members to honor requests made at that time.  If the program is cancelled or postponed the center should be notified.  Requests for programs can be made by contacting the center at 231-6557 or clicking here. Someone will contact you by phone or e-mail to confirm your request.

Cook Counseling Center's Online Screening Module

Cook Counseling Center and Screening for Mental Health, Inc. offer free and anonymous online screening for depression, alcohol use, eating disorders, and anxiety. The online screenings are informational, not diagnostic, and treatment recommendations are not provided. Online screening is made available so that Virginia Tech students may find out whether consultation with a Cook Counseling Center counselor may be helpful.
